Book Review- Along the river, By Adeline Yen Mah

Good morning all,

I just finished reading this really great book that I ordered from book outlet and I’m glad that I got it. First it is listed as teen fiction but I would say it is historical teen fiction, only because it gives a lot of historical facts in the story.

Good Reads description,

Bestselling Chinese American author Adeline Yen Mah weaves her authentic accounts of life in China into an absorbing novel about a Chinese girl and her vision of a previous life.

After a fall, CC is whisked away to a hospital. As she drifts in and out of consciousness, she is haunted by vivid dreams that seem strange—yet somehow familiar. Thus begins CC’s emotional journey back to a privileged life lived eight hundred years ago during the Song dynasty.

CC is the daughter of a wealthy and influential man, but she finds herself drawn to a poor orphan boy with a startling ability to capture the beauty of the natural world. As the relationship between these two young people deepens, the transforming power of art and romantic love comes into conflict with the immovable rules of Chinese society.

This stunning fantasy adventure novel, inspired by China’s most famous painting, Along the River at the Qing Ming Festival, tells the story of a friendship both tender and bold. CC’s remarkable journey reminds readers that though time moves on, art and love endure.

I really loved the story because of the historical detail given when the author tells the story of mei lan.  Mei lan is the girl whom CC has dreams and visions of.. The detail in the story of the history and time made me feel as if I were really there, while reading I could see the people and places of the story. For me that important in an story because it keeps my interest and makes me ant to find out what happens next.  Even thought it was a short read it was definitly enjoyable and one that I will revisit.

I’m recommending the book because not many books catch my interest like this one when it comes to detail and history. If you like reading about Chinese culture and history this book is worth the read. I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book review – a Sparrow in Terezin by Kristy Cambron

First let me say that I received this book complimentary from book look bloggers website in exchange for an honest review.
Good reads synopsis

Two women, one in the present day and one in 1942, each hope for a brighter future. But they’ll both have to battle through their darkest days to reach it.

“Today. “With the grand opening of her new gallery and a fairytale wedding months away, Sera James appears to have a charmed life. But in an instant, the prospect of a devastating legal battle surrounding her fiance threatens to tear her dreams apart. Sera and William rush to marry and are thrust into a world of doubt and fear as they defend charges that could separate them for life.

“June 1942. “After surviving the Blitz bombings that left many Londoners with shattered lives, Kaja Makovsky prayed for the war to end so she could return home to Prague. But despite the horrors of war, the gifted journalist never expected to see a headline screaming the extermination of Jews in work camps. Half-Jewish with her family in danger, Kaja has no choice but to risk everything to get her family out of Prague. But with the clutches of evil all around, her escape plan crumbles into deportation, and Kaja finds herself in a new reality as the art teacher to the children of Terezin.

Bound by a story of hope and the survival of one little girl, both Sera and Kaja will fight to protect all they hold dear.

First let me say from reading the reviews I knew this was gonna be a good story, but and yes there’s a but. The way the it is written how back and forth between both stories of the two main characters and it got a little confusing for me and made it difficult to keep track of the story line. I didn’t get all the way threw the book because of this, it became frustrating for me. I will say the story is a good one and the author has a good way of telling the story, I just couldn’t get into it.

I will try to revisit this book when  I can really focus on the way it is written, I would however recommend this book.

Book review- Dorothy must die

First before I start I wanna let u know if u haven’t read the book there are some spoilers included here.
This is my first book review post so please bear with me, at first I had never even heard of the book or the author but one of the tags I subscribe to on pad gram is bookstagram, and I kept seeing posts of this book so it kinda caught my attention. I researched it on good reads and also the publisher site and instantly became interested. My thought was Humm a darker version of the wizard of oz, sound good. But of course I couldn’t find it anywhere and the library didn’t have it, but then I got lucky, while walking threw the book section at target it kinda jumped out at me and it was the last copy, I just knew it had to be mine. Ok enought back story.

When I first started to me it seemed a bit slow, and I was like oh no I’m not gonna like it, but I know that the author had to give the main characters backstory, Amy the loner who from a young age get teased and called trailer trash because she lives in a trailer park with her mother who is a alcoholic. Things for her weren’t always like this, it all started after her father left. Amy has always tried to stay in the shadows and stay out of trouble, but trouble always seems to find her.

The story really begins when there is a tornado warning issued in Kansas and her mother decided that she was gonna go out with her friend to a party, telling Amy that there really isn’t anything to worry about and off she goes.

Well without going into much detail you can imagine what happens next. Amy is in Oz. Now see this is where I thought it would get interesting but at this point she’s kinda confused and in denial. In comes the story of how Dorothy kinda became evil explained to her by the person who resues her.

Long story short she is trying to mak her way to emerald city, pretty familiar huh. But that where the similarity ends. The adventure begins. She makes it to oz but is captured by Dorothy for helping a traitor and locked up, well this where it gets interesting, she is resued by the remaining wicked witches and recruited to fight for freeing oz from Dorothy’s  evil reign.

This is where I’m gonna stop and say this book is the first in a 2 book series( at least as of now) for the most part in the beginning it started off slow but as I got into the book it became interesting to see what was gonna happen next and I would definitly recommend it if u like the oz story and wanna see the darker side. I’m really excited to read the second book  and see where Amy’s adventure leads her. Will she defeat Dorothy and free oz.
Stay tuned for the second review of the second book…

Just in case anyone was interested in reading it.. My review will be honest and include a photo of the books and also a photo of the description so that way if you are interested in the book u can make the decision based on the summary and not just my review.

To bigger and better things!

first I would like to say good afternoon, I hope everyone is doing well,  know that i have been quiet of late but there is a good reason for that.

The reason, well me and hubby have decided that our current house is just not working for us any longer. When we first bought this house 6 yrs ago it was suppose to be our forever home.. But back then we only had two girls, and now with the new baby ther just isn’t enough space. Yes I know I could put two girls in one room, however I don’t feel that it’s right to take away a room from one of them, it’s their space and I would like to keep it that way.. So we decided to put the house up for sale however to do that the house needed a facelift in the form of some paint. Lucky for us no major work needs to be done because we just remodeled the bath and kitchen not that long ago.

So we have been cleaning and mending and painting and boxing and all the other things needed to get done so that pictures can be taken. The realtor came today, we are using the same one that helped us but this house, she took the pics and finished with any paperwork that needs to be done and also put up the sign.  So now I can relax and just do the normal day to day things. And I promise that I will try to blog as much as I possible can.. Hopefully I’ll be writing some blogs on some books that I’m reading and write some some awesome reviews.

Until next time

Way too cold!

Omg it is so cold here in Philly, I’m not even sure what the temp is but I’m pretty sure that it is below 0. Or at least it feels that way with the wind chill.

Even though charter and public schools were open today I decided that since I drive my younger one to school and I would have to take the baby out that I would give them a day off.. Plus hubby was at home sick, and I know he is sick when he doesn’t go to work. He does not take days off. So I was taking care of him, and then I had to go to work and be in by 6pm but my 10 yr old is really good about helping with the baby so I wasn’t really worried.

Work wasn’t too bad tonight, you see I work at Macy’s in the watch and fine Jewelry dept. so usually around this time of year (tax time) it can get a little crazy. But I guess since it was so cold out that when I started it was a little busy but by 7 pm it died down. On the plus side I caught a customer trying to pass off a fake 100 dollar bill. I guess he thought that since it was closing time that I would be too busy to notice.. Hahah think again I took one look at it, and also just by the feel of it I politely said I cannot accept this it is not real. And he was like ohh what.. I asked if he had another bill and he was like naw, and he didn’t want the watch. Hum I wonder it I’ll get praised for it by my manager, since it was a expensive watch he was trying to buy.

The only part of the night that I was not looking forward too was going to my car and having to wait for it to warm up.. But besides that my night went well, especially when I saw my neighbor coming home from the bar and she gave me a beer.. Yeah I needed it and I enjoyed it too.. Well now it’s time for me to get in bed, the baby is sleeping and so are my girls so I better take advantage.

I hope everyone has a great night, and if you live in a state that’s getting the tons of snow or the freezing temps, please stay safe and warm.
